BEAUTIFUL, RADIANT THINGS

Mumbling to herself, planting the same vegetables each year, Opal keeps vigilant watch on her electric fence, tracing its long path round her property every morning, repairing as necessary to avoid unwelcome callers. But no one visits, except her son each night for dinner. And, frankly, she could do without him. One morning, a half-drowned girl arrives. She’s got through the fence, and is pleading for help. But Opal is done helping. Until she begins to understand who the girl is.
